Menauhant Pier: Two Ladies Out for a Stroll
I.
Stepping out in my summer finery --
beribboned straw hat, white starched collar,
wonderful taffeta linen brushing my legs.
Oh to be young and palling around
with my best friend Sue.
A flag whips in the wind;
a sailboat shushes through cool water.
The Inn’s veranda beckons us.
Soon we’ll be home, back to the normal round,
but here we’re fancy free, so happy.
II.
On the pier the ladies stroll.
The boys gone on, they’re alone.
Time for holding hands,
talking, walking in step together.
In the distance, boaters ply the waves;
a couple returns to their waiting auto.
The faraway sound of gulls.
Waves lap the pilings.
The day wanes,
too soon gone.
