Cape Codder Hotel Memories

I worked and lived at the Cape Codder until my family sold it in 1980.
I maintained most everything in that hotel…
…the elevator would crap out on a Friday
when we had a tour due in by 5:30 p.m.
The coils that pulled the relays in would fail.
Sometimes I’d have to push a relay in to open the door to let people out.

I lived in the South Cupola, (nearest the pool) in the Summer.
The hotel had TWO flagpoles on top of the cupolas.
Lightning would hit them! One lightning strike in WWII
started a small fire, quickly doused.
Sometimes a lightning storm would start in the middle of the night.
Static electricity would literally make
your hair stand up, besides other interesting things.
I never worried about lightning…

Often, I’d go out on the bar patio.
Most guests would be looking out towards the West
at a beautiful sunset…while I’d be looking back
at that 1900s era building…figuring what maintenance
I’d have to do in the Fall.
