Miss Frances Scythes
Bridgeton, N.J.
Frannie,
You don’t see Kay come in every day.
You don’t see that stiff upper lip quiver
or how she wipes her starched linen cuff
quick across her eyes.
And the bounce is gone from her stride.
A few of us here in the village
knew you were “special friends.”
It’s in how you looked at each other.
For Pete’s sake, just let her off the hook.
I know someone brave enough.
Set her free.
Tell her you’ve gone on to what’s expected.
Yours sincerely,
E.J.S., Postal Clerk
