Wood Neck Beach Elegy
August 23, 2030
Hi Mither—
Remember when Nana taught me
how to stand on my head underwater?
And when the tide turned, she’d let the ebb current
carry her off on “Nature’s Water Whiz.”
She’d pack the cooler with tuna sandwiches
and a thermos of punch.
You read your Agatha Christie,
I played with my Star Wars figures,
and Nana did the crossword.
These once-in-a-century storms
have stolen all the sand, consumed
the dune and drowned the marsh.
The Town said there was nothing they could do.
Can you imagine what Nana would say to that?
I’ll come see you soon. We’ll play some Scrabble!
Love,
David
