On the Relationship Between the Visual and the Written Arts: A Quote from Claire-Louise Bennett

Description

A colleague and fellow reader of works by women gave me a copy of the magazine, "The Second Shelf: Rare Books & Words by Women," Issue 2 - Autumn 2019. Now I am reading all I can by Joanna Walsh and Claire-Louise Bennett!
Having always been fascinated with the relationship between the visual arts and the text, especially the study of objects, I was delighted to read the following quote from Walsh's interview with Bennett. Of her work "Pond," Bennett says:
"I like looking at stuff though, it excites me in a way that's difficult for me to understand, and I enjoy reflecting on that mystery. I think our reactions to visual material contain very important information about our imagination, and therefore our soul--I believe the soul tries to communicate with us via the objects that our eyes are drawn to. Aesthetic predilection is not just a matter of taste."
